Although Jaguars and Leopards may look alike, understanding the differences between them requires a closer look. Similarly, while Toyota Production System (TPS) and Lean Manufacturing seem similar at first, they’ve developed separately over the past 40 years.
Lean Manufacturing started from studying TPS in the 1980s and has since evolved with its own features, like merging with Six Sigma. Despite widespread Lean Six Sigma training, it’s uncertain if it truly reflects TPS’s evolution.
To grasp the dissimilarities, lifelong learning is crucial. Operational excellence practitioners must thoroughly understand both systems to use them effectively
